The role

We are looking for an experienced Solicitor to join us as Head of Professional Ethics.

The Professional Ethics team is at the forefront in providing valuable advice and guidance to the legal profession. As the Head of Professional Ethics, you will lead the delivery and direction of Ethics guidance to stakeholders by ensuring guidance is accurate, consistent and timely.

In this role you will provide both strategic and operational leadership. Using your legal expertise and knowledge of the SRA regulatory framework, you will deliver technical and professional recommendations which have a demonstrable impact on performance and guides policy and strategic decision making. You will lead the professional ethics function, of circa 20 staff, driving excellence in service delivery while maintaining productivity. The Ethics team provides guidance via telephone helpline, in writing, and via webchat.

You will be enthusiastic and capable in driving customer excellence and implementing operational and culture change and continuous improvement for the function. These themes are key aspects of the role, underpinning the strategic and operational leadership, which you will deliver through your team.

As part of the SRA leadership team, you will support the Director in representing the function by participating in, and contributing to, strategic decisions for the SRA. You will work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders and be asked to provide guidance on matters which affect or may affect regulation of the profession.

What we are looking for

  • Qualified Solicitor with significant legal and regulatory experience including experience within private practice
  • Comprehensive understanding of legal principles, regulations, and frameworks governing the legal profession, including the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) Handbook, Solicitors Code of Conduct, and relevant legislation.
  • Ability to make timely and informed decisions by interpreting and applying ethical standards to complex legal scenarios, demonstrating a strong sense of integrity and adherence to professional conduct guidelines
  • Proven leadership skills with the ability to inspire and motivate a team of ethics professionals, fostering a culture of accountability, transparency, and continuous improvement.
  • Experience in building and maintaining positive relationships with stakeholders
  • Resilient, flexible and adaptable leader and champion of change
